“An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. ”
-Benjamin Franklin
When we think about our tires, we tend to think of them as after-thought. The tread pattern, the speed rating, the ply all sounds foreign so it tends to be glossed over when purchasing a new set. We know the big brands. The Michelin's the Goodyear's. Who makes the best? I don't have the answer to that question but I do have some things to ponder.
Your vehicle's tires will treat you well as long as you treat them well. Making sure they are filled properly matters. The tread depth of your tires can give you an idea how much life your tires have remaining. The condition of your control arms and ball joints matters and it effects your tires tremendously. As the temperatures fluctuate, the amount of pressure in your tires will drop and in the cold a well maintained tire will perform better.
Replacing worn out tires is a good idea. As a tire deforms it raises the risk of catastrophic failure the more it's driven on. The inner metal part of the tire may start exposing itself the more the tire wears away which is a good indication that the vehicle has an imbalance or worn out components.
If you take your vehicle in for service, it's a good idea to have them take a good look at your tires and even have them measure the tread depth. If you do your own service, get a good tire gauge from Amazon.
Happy driving and safe travels. -Art
